The Web Disk feature is essentially cPanel’s implementation of the Web distributed Authoring and Versioning protocol (WebDAV). WebDAV protocol facilitates easy access to your files on the web from your desktop. It fosters the process of file management related to your website. On creating a Web Disk account and accessing the Web Disk feature you can easily navigate, upload, download files to and from the web server easily. Web Disk is basically a drag and drop interface which facilitates quick access to complete file management tasks.

Steps to set up a Web Disk Account

The account has to be created first before you can remotely start accessing files. The steps are as follows-

  • Click on Web Disk in the files section of cPanel home screen
  • Under the tab Create an Additional Web Disk account, type the username in the Username textbox.
  • In the New Password text box type the password.
  • Retype the password in the Password (Again) text box.
  • cPanel automatically fills in the users Web Disk directory in the Directory box based on the username typed in Step 1.
  • Click on read only to grant read permissions only. The default permission of the directory is for write access and full read.
  • For initiating the digest authentication, select the Enable Digest Authentication check box. In this regard users of Window vista, Windows 7 or 8 should use an encrypted web disk connection. Digest Authentication is mandatory in this case.
  • Click create to complete the account creation process.

Power Features on Web Disk

You can also make account modifications by changing the password, setting permissions and enabling digest authentication. The Web Disk feature is compatible with some iOS apps like keynote and Pages. Another important factor is that the default directory for your Web Disk is the home directory. The home directory is not visible to the public therefore it is safe to save files here. Documents can also be secured safely in the public_html directory. This allows you to download documents directly from the browser. The directory should be first well secured with a password. Web Disk can also be accessed in browser. If you need to access a file from a device not set up for web disk, you can still log in through your browser and download any file within your hosting partition. This access method however does not have a logout function. Log in through devices where you can clear the cache or run it on private browsing mode. cPanel’s Web Disk is therefore a power feature which makes file access and management easy as though they were stored on the local computer.
