What does WHM do?

To give you a better understanding of what WHM is, the following is a list of the things that this powerful tool can do:

  • Create and manage user accounts. You can also delete and suspend cPanel accounts and establish pricing tiers.
  • Manage and monitor websites. In the event that one of the sites you host is hacked or attacked, there is a very low chance that the hacker will be able to get in to the sites.
  • Provide client support. You can set up support settings for your clients so they can contact you.
  • Backing up a server. It offers full control for backing up a server, with features like backup configuration and restoration.
  • With WHM, users will be able to integrate their own images and colors in accordance with their brands. Simply put, you can customize your hosting and control panels with the use of WHM.

How is it different from cPanel?

It can be quite easy to mistake WHM for cPanel. But these are two tools that are very distinctive from each other.

While WHM gives the user administrative control of dedicated or Virtual Private Server, a cPanel is for managing certain domains or hosting accounts on a dedicated or virtual private server.

In short, cPanel is for the end users or the clients, while the WHM is for those who administer the servers or the system administrators.

Levels of server administration

There are two levels of server administration available for WHM users—resellers rights and full server management rights.

In reseller rights, the subset of features can be restricted by the server administrator depending on the level or type of server that the client is paying for. The client may be an individual like a web developer or designer who is reselling hosting to other clients. It may also be web agencies that are in a similar set-up or arrangement.

In short, these are clients of web hosting companies that also become hosting firms by re-selling their hosting services to other clients.

In full server management rights, the system administrator has full control over the features or functionalities offered to the client.

In summary, WHM is a server management interface that gives users administrative control of a dedicated or virtual private server. Used in conjunction with cPanel, WHM can enable system administrators to provide satisfactory hosting experience to their clients.
