Spam Filter Creation 101

Posted by Jamison on 15 04 2016.

As long as the Internet is alive, spam will exist. However, this does not mean you should just let it flood your accounts. With the right techniques, you can fight off spam and keep these annoying, and unfortunately, threatening emails from your inbox.

A Quick Overview on Spam

Before we proceed with helping you prevent spam from taking over your inbox, you should first get to know what it is first.

Basically, spam is the act of “flooding” Internet-based assets, such as email accounts, with messages of exactly the same content. This is used to force whatever its content is on the people who usually do not want to receive it. In many cases, these spam messages are advertisements, often from shady individuals marketing low quality, even dubious products. Some will also try to encourage you to partake in get-rich-quick schemes.

Fighting Spam from Your cPanel with SpamAssassin

Now that you know more about spam, let us talk about cPanel’s way of fighting it. One of these is through the use of SpamAssassin, an open-source tool preloaded into every cPanel user’s dashboard. It is designed to classify emails and filter them, ensuring that you do not receive messages you do not want to.

How it Works

SpamAssassin uses a unique, impressive formula that allows it to do a good job in keeping spam at bay. It analyzes the subject line and body text of email messages, it uses Bayesian filtering, and it also runs on a DNS blacklisting technology. With this activated on your cPanel account, you can expect a dramatic reduction in the spam mails you get, or even completely hinder them from reaching your inbox.

How to Start Using SpamAssassin

It is quite easy to create a spam filter through the use of SpamAssassin. Just follow these steps to begin enjoying the benefits of this useful tool:

  1. Head over to your cPanel account’s “Mail” section and look for the option for “Apache SpamAssassin.” Just in case your web host service provider has not activated it for you yet, you can simply turn it on by clicking on the button. Once you enable this feature, you now can create email filters. You even have the choice when it comes to how powerful you like the restriction and limitation to be.

  1. Go to the “Email” section, choose the option for “Global Filters,” and then hit the “Create New Filter” button.
  2. In the “Rules” section, look for the “Spam Bar” option listed in the first menu. Click on the “Contains” option found at the second menu (still in the “Rules” section).

  1. You will be asked to input a spam score (how greatly you want SpamAssassin to perform its filtering functionalities). Enter a series of (+) symbols, together with the number you want for your spam score. 5 is usually enough for individual, basic users.

  1. Head over to the “Actions” section and then choose “Deliver to folder.” Input the folder name you want the annoying emails to redirect to.

  1. Choose the “Create” button. This will enable the spam filter.

SpamAssassin is a great tool you should start using as soon as possible.
