The use of SFTP protocol comes into picture when we are concerned with the security of file access, transfer, and management. This protocol is secure over FTP protocol as it uses an SSH key driven method of encryption. Security has always been a prime concern in every department of business. The online security is a matter of great concern since one can rarely identify the theft. It not only affects the host, it also affects the number of users using that particular website. Therefore, it has become quintessential to not take security for granted.
Here are the steps one can refer while setting up SFTP on Cpanel
First and foremost requirement is to create an SSH key pair. This is the first step in setting up SFTP on Cpanel. Try to login into Cpanel, and go straight to the access section which says SSH/Shell Access Section.
Post that, you will be required to click on, Manage SSH keys button. One can generate a new key there. Mind it; if you have done this before, then there should be no key on the server.
You can name the key anything which you feel like. After giving the name of the key, you will be required to enter the password. It is advised to enter a strong password; otherwise, there will be no use of opting for SFTP. Simple passwords like Hello123 should be avoided. The password strength should be excellent. You can make a word file for storing all your passwords, and you can update this password in that particular file if you find difficulty in remembering passwords.
Next question will be for the key type. RSA key should be preferred and if we were to choose the most secure key size then 4096 is the size we must watch out for.
Next step in key generation is to click on Generate key. It (Cpanel) will take few seconds to minutes to generate your key pair. You can see your key pair, both private and public when you will head back to the Manage SSH key sections.
After the creation of the key, next step is to authorize them. You cannot directly use them. Straightly go to Manage Authorization and click on the Authorize button.
You will be required to download the private key in ppk format. Therefore, click on the View/Download button on the private key, and you will be asked to enter the password. This is the same password which you have created while creating the key. You will then be able to download the .ppk file.
By following these simple steps, you can easily setup SFTP on Cpanel.
