How To Set Up WooCommerce So You Can Start Selling Online

Posted by Allura Murray-Cruz on 08 11 2017.

The WooCommerce plugin has made it quick and simple for any WordPress-based website to sell, promote and provide after-sales marketing  for their products online. Today we’re going to have a look at how you can install WooCommerce in five simple steps and start selling.

Choose Your Host And Install WordPress

You do need a self-hosted WordPress site to begin with. You can either install WordPress via ftp, or use the Softaculous App to do it for you.

Upload Your Website Theme

It is advisable to install your website theme before installing WooCommerce. If you have purchased a theme you can upload it in Appearance > Themes > New. WooCommerce recommends Storefront themes as they have been constructed with WooCommerce in mind, but there are plenty of premium themes available to give your online users an exclusive experience.

Install WooCommerce

WooCommerce may offer plenty of functionality to your site but installing it is actually pretty simple and, of course, you have options too.

  1. You can create an account on the WooCommerce website for free. Once you have created your free account, download the zipped plugin and then upload it in your WordPress dashboard. In your WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins > Add New > Upload and select the plugin you downloaded. Once it has uploaded, click on install, and then activate.

  1. If you are inside your WordPress dashboard, navigate to Plugins > Add New > Search plugins and type in “WooCommerce”. Find the plugin in the set of options, click on install and then activate. You also have the option to set the Set Up Wizard to make sure you don’t leave out any of the important set up steps.

Customize WooCommerce For Your Needs

Now that you have the e-commerce backbone powering your website, you will need to customize your settings. Find the WooCommerce menu on your left hand side navigation and select “Settings”.

In this section you’ll be able to your base location, your local currency and the countries you are selling to, as well as the measurements settings for your products.

You’ll be able to set up your shipping areas and costs as well, and set the recipients for new and cancelled orders.

Your checkout section is very important, as this is where you will specify your Terms and Conditions, Cart and Checkout pages. This is also the section where you will configure your payment options so consider which will be most convenient to your users.

Once you have completed your set-up settings, you will be able to create your first product.

Remember: WooCommerce will need updating on a regular basis. If you need help, check out our article WooCommerce and Protecting Yourself from Hackers.

Extend Your Online Experience

The WooCommerce plugin and its functionality may be free but there are a number of exciting extensions that can enhance your users’ online experience, and make running your online store that much easier. Whether you need to charge monthly or annual memberships, build your subscription base, run monthly campaigns or take live bookings, WooCommerce has an extension for you.

So what are you waiting for? It’s time to start selling online.
