Pointing Two URLs to the Same Website

Posted by Allura on 08 08 2018.

Introduction
A good way to redirect traffic to one’s site from various other domain names is by pointing two URLs to the same website. This can be done in two ways:

Redirect one of the URLs to one’s primary domain.
Create an alias for one of the URLs. This alias will point that domain towards the primary domain.

Redirect A Website
It happens when one types a web address in the address bar and sends a visitor to the other website (or URL) that is different from the one typed in. As for example: if one moves the website content to a new URL, it can direct the seasonal visitors (who may retain the old web address better than the new one) to one’s new location with a redirect.

How To Create A Redirect With The cPanel Interface

One can redirect a website from Redirects interface in cPanel. For that, one needs to go to Domains section and click on Redirects (there on the cPanel home page) or can type Redirects in the search bar. One should follow the rules to create the redirection. For additional help, one can refer to Redirects documentation.

Create An Alias (Or The Action Formerly Known As Parking A Domain)

It’s the same thing as a redirect when the system creates a alias, exception being that the name of the website shown on the address bar is not subjected to any change. Its like using two scenery frames for the same artwork. The content of the website is absolutely same for both the URLs (the artwork). The thing that changes is the URL shown in the address bar (the scenery frames). For example, example.org is an alias for example.com.

One can create an alias for various domains to show the same page. It just needs to be registered with a valid domain registrar before one create the alias. One needs to make sure of the name servers to be same as the primary domain (the domain one points at).

It is important to note that one must be aware of the type of hosting account or package one’s account has. If one has a reseller account, then there is a need to ask the provider if one has the access or permission to create an alias or not.

Here,

  • Instead of creating the alias, one can redirect one of the URLs if one does not have the permission.
  • In case one has the permission, then it is just required to ask for the number of domains for which one is allowed to create an alias.

How To Create An Alias With The cPanel Interface

If one needs to create an alias, then one can go to the Domains section, and click on Aliases in the cPanel home page. One can even type Aliases in the search bar. To add domain, one needs to click on Add Domain after typing the desired domain name in the Domain text box.

If this creation is free from any issue then it will show: You have successfully created the alias, “example.net”. And if there are issues like for example: the domain is having wrong name servers, then one will receive an error message. One needs to make sure that all the issues highlighted in the Important section is solved to minimize the chances for errors.

Conclusion

There are ways to pointing two URLs to the same website which can help in directing traffic from one site with different domain names. The key configurations and associated details are mentioned in this article.
