SpamAssassin is one of the best anti-spam utilities that all cPanel and WHM users can take advantage of. This free utility is also usually offered by many web hosting companies, so yours likely have it as well. This spam-combating tool works by safeguarding your email from unwanted email addresses. The best part is, the tool prevents the receipt of these possibly-spam-emails before find their way into your inbox.
By default, cPanel has this tool disabled, but all you have to do is to enable it so you can enjoy all its protective features, such as the “Spam Box.”
How the Tool Works
One thing to keep in mind is that SpamAssassin differs from many other spam prevention utilities in the way that it does not serve as a type of email filter. What it does is to determine whether an email message (or the address itself) is spam as soon as it gets into the server. It works on your email server’s back end, and you can choose from 10 different spam catching settings. When you enable it on your cPanel account, you get the default 5, which is the mid-range level.
The Default 5 Score: Should You Change It?
SpamAssassin follows a points based system the developers refer to as “hits.” They use this system to label and gauge spam. It runs on the idea of looking for certain characteristics and qualities in an email; and the seriousness, severity, or the specificity of these depends on on the points value. When an email sent to you and it gets into the server, the tool will check it using its points based technology. In the event the email goes beyond the maximum set point value, SpamAssassin will then flag it as spam.
In layman’s term, the lower you set the score, the more spam you will catch. For instance, when you set it to 1, all it takes for the tool to flag it as spam is a single hit. Set the score higher, and the email will require more hits for the tool to label it as spam.
Taking it to the Next Level with Spam Box
Once you have SpamAssassin up and running, you can take even more advantage of it, what with all the features it has to offer. Taking these steps will make it even easier for you to catch and prevent spam. As mentioned in the introductory part of this article, one such feature is Spam Box.
In a nutshell, a spam box is one of the components of your email account. It follows a process similar to the spam folders you will find in Gmail and Yahoo mail. SpamAssassin sends each of the emails it labelled as spam into a folder specifically made for such unnecessary and unwanted messages.
How to Enable Spam Box
All you need to do to enable this feature of SpamAssassin is to head to the same page where you turned on the spam fighting tool. Here, you will find the button for turning on the spam box.
