Your website isn’t a “Set it and forget it” project, it’s a work in progress and, if you’ve had it created with content management software, it’s even more important you perform regular updates on your site. Today we’ll taking a look at why this is important, and how you can improve the online experience for your users.
To Update Or Not To Update?
Your CMS website is comprised of different components: software, themes and plugins. Together, all of these components perform their magic and result in a wonderful experience for your online user. But that’s only when they are all running their latest versions and are operating optimally.
Regular updates have a three-fold benefit:
Secure Your Site
One of the most important reasons to do regular updates is because of the increased security. Any vulnerabilities will be patched by the developers, and you will be able to upload the most secure versions of the software to your site. Also consider that once vulnerabilities have been identified (and patched), they are made public and any hackers out there are very well aware of the potential. If you don’t want a hacked website, do your updates!
As a side-note: Not every single WordPress update features a security update. The releases with a single digit after the digit often do not cover security, so you may be able to wait up to seven days before installing them.
Get Rid Of The Bugs
Not every piece of software runs flawlessly. It is quite common for bugs to creep in, particularly with newer software. And it’s only once a few hundred people start using the software that bugs start showing up.
Give Your Site New Functionality And Better Features
As time goes on and technology progresses, developers can produce more impressive features in plugins, themes and software. If you want to offer the most impressive and progressive functionality, you can only reallydo that with the latest versions.
Remember: your competitors are working very hard to give users the best experience. If you want to compete, you should offer the best online experience too.
So it all sounds great in theory, but where do you start? We recommend setting a day aside every week to check your site for updates. You may have a lot of work to do the first time you attempt this, but once you have the site up to date and are running the latest versions of all the software, maintaining it will be quick and easy.
