Perl Module Installer: It is used to install, download and search for a Perl module from the CPAN repository. There are certain steps to search and install a Perl module—

  1. It can either be found by entering a search term in the available text box and clicking Go or by clicking on Show available Perl modules to list CPAN provided Perl modules.
  2. Information on all the displayed modules is displayed by the interface; it consists of the module’s name, the module’s version number, a description of it and the actions that can be performed on that module.
  3. To install the desired module click install and click show docs to view a module’s documentation.
  4. Enter a new keyword in the Search text box and click Go if the desired module cannot be found.

The table that lists all of the existing modules on the server is the Installed Perl Module table. Every installed module displays the module’s name, version number, and actions which can be classified into:

  • Updating the module.
  • Reinstalling the module from CPAN.
  • Uninstalling the module from the server.
  • Displaying the module’s documentation on CPAN.

Installation of Perl modules can be done by building the module from source when a single module with no dependencies has to be installed.

Ubuntu cloud VPS: Sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get upgrade

sudo apt-get install Perl build-essential curl

The Perl module can be built by using these commands –

Perl Makefile.PL

make

make test

make install

No dependencies are installed in this process. Otherwise, the system package manager can be used to install the module and all its dependencies or else just the CPAN command will suffice. When executing CPAN for the first time, some configuration parameters need to be set. Some modules on CPAN require more recent versions of Perl (version 5.8 or more).

For Windows, there is Strawberry Perl, which consists of a compiler and is able to install XS CPAN modules from CPAN directly.
