CentOS 5 Depreciation coming March 2017: How to Migrate to CentOS 7
As you might be aware, CentOS 5 will soon be reaching End of Life (EOL) in March 2017:
EOL for CentOS 5 means that cPanel and Red Hat will no longer provide updates or security fixes for that particular version and it is highly recommended that you migrate from a CentOS 5 server to a CentOS 7 one to avoid any interruption of service or updates.
With time running short we want to ensure that you have plenty of time to plan your migration. cPanel support has put together a guide with some helpful tips on making the migration process easier:
Using the cPanel Transfer Tool
If you use cPanel, you have the luxury to easily migrate from one server to another.
Before doing so, you must first contact your hosting service provider and ask for a CentOS 7 server you can migrate to. Once you accomplish this, you can proceed with our three-phase procedure.
- Log in to the Web Host Manager or WHM as the ‘root’ user.
- Once you get in, look for the Transfers icon. Open it.
- Then, open the Transfer Tool.
- On the Remote Server Address text box, enter the remote server that contains the configurations that you want to transfer.
- Enter the port number. Normally, port 22 is the default port.
- Choose whether to log in as the root user or a different user account. Normally, the root user is the default user.
- Click the Fetch Account List to see information about the source server.
You will have to migrate your accounts and configurations but we strongly suggest that you migrate them separately. Configurations must be migrated first.
- Click Show near Service Configurations. This will uncover all your server’s available configurations. The Configuration Name and Analysis columns show the configurations and the versions.
- Pick out your desired configurations that you prefer to transfer to your local server. Warning messages are shown in yellow. Blocker messages are shown in red. Receiving a block message will disable the EasyApache option.
- Click Copy. The system will then show the progress interface. It cannot be clicked unless you select a configuration for transfer.
The Transfer column shows the status of the configurations from the source server while the Restore column shows the ones to the destination server.
Error messages will be shown in yellow text and warning messages will be in red.
The summary bar shows restored or transferred configurations.
- Check if your server operates as planned. You have to use the Service Manager tool for this.
Now, you can use the Transfer Tool interface to migrate preferred accounts.
- Check the accounts you want to migrate.
- If the list is too long and you cannot immediately find the one you desire, type in the name of the accounts you want to migrate on the Search text box below Accounts.
- Once you’re finished, click Copy. You will then be sent to the progress interface. This can take quite some time.
- Once the process is done, the accounts will be completely transferred to your new server
