Long-time cPanel users know that the platform’s dated user interface, X3, was gradually deprecating. Soon, it will be time to finally bid it goodbye. There is a schedule, though, so make sure you keep yourself updated.
Paper Lantern will be the default theme for brand new cPanel and WHM installations. This will be applied on all new accounts, however; the changes will not have any bearing on existing installations. Even third-party theme users will not be affected.
X3 maintenance procedures that are non-emergency and -security related will gradually come to a stop. Staff members of the development and release departments will focus all future developments on Paper Lantern.
All current accounts, packages, and plans that have been updated from previous versions to 11.54 and are still making use of X3 will automatically be pushed to Paper Lantern. They will also receive the default Retro style. However, the cPanel team also points out several exceptions, including the following:
All of the 11.54-related public documents for cPanel and WHM will be covered by the Paper Lantern interface change. Versions before this will not be affected.
The cPanel team has not reported any deprecation schedule for the 11.56 version, as they want to accommodate the possibility of unpredictable changes.
In the 11.58 version, cPanel and WHM will no longer be shipped with the X3 interface. Any WHM customization feature that are solely X3-run will also be eliminated.
X3 vs. Paper Lantern Appearance: What’s the Difference?
Although Paper Lantern’s Retro Style was intended to approximate that of X3, cPanel developers say that users should not expect a perfect implementation. The main reason the Retro Style was developed is to make the transition easier for all users, and not as the final user destination. There will also be a scheduled deprecation for the Paper Lantern’s default theme, information on which will be provided in the future.
Completion of Deprecation Schedule
According to the cPanel and WHM experts, the deprecation schedule is expected to be completed within a year. They will be providing all necessary information about changes or additions to the schedule, so that all users will be kept abreast. In addition, routine maintenance, together with fixes for current bugs and glitches, will also continue, in accordance with the platform’s Long Term Support Policy.
All in all, once the 11.58 version has reached its “End of Life” status, all versions of cPanel, from 11.58 onwards, will no longer receive support for X3. So make sure you stay updated for any current news about the schedule, to avoid inconveniences and potential site down time.
