Ensuring the smooth operation of your websites and servers require you to know backup solutions for cPanel and WHM (web host manager). As you may well know, one of the golden rules of using hosting services, or any computer for that matter, is creating backup files of all the data in your server which you can use in case you need to recover damaged files or when you have to restore your crashed server.

Backups are especially important if you are using cPanel and WHM where deleted files are impossible to recover. Fortunately, these two hosting programs have built-in backup solutions. And in case you don’t want to totally depend on your hosting provider when creating your backups, there are premium solutions available as well.

The success of your backup solutions for cPanel and WHM rely on the amount of free disk space you can use. As a rule, your free space must be at least twice the size of that used by backup files presently stored on your server. The reason for this is that cPanel and WHM will wait for the latest backup process to finish before they will automatically delete old backups.

Built-in Backup Solution in cPanel

Your hosting provider’s cPanel program includes a function that allows you to create backups on an account level. Here are the steps involved in creating cPanel backup using the built-in feature:

  1. Log into your cPanel account.
  2. On the main window, click the Backups icon located under the Files section.
  3. Choose between a Full Backup or a Partial Backup.
  4. For Partial Backup, click the database you want to download.

Once the process is done, a zipped copy of your site or partial databases will be downloaded into your system outside the server. This built-in backup feature in cPanel does not provide automatic backup schedule. You have to configure the process manually.

Backup Solution in WHM

In WHM, the built-in backup interface can be accessed from the Home screen. Click on Backup and then Backup Configuration. Just like in cPanel, configuring the backup process in WHM is easy. The system will run the backup process of all of the files and data that the user owns. The process will exclude files that the user can’t access or doesn’t own.

Premium Backup Solutions for Resellers or VPS

Of course, there are paid backup solutions for cPanel and WHM. Typically, web hosting providers only offer server-wide backups for dealing with disaster recovery. If you are a reseller and you need to restore a single account or one website, you need to process the backup manually. Having total control of your backup process has its benefits and this is where paid solutions come in.

Premium solutions give you independence from your hosting provider. You will be able to easily protect your data and every domain in your server right within WHM. As a reseller, you can select the accounts or users to backup based on their hosting package, usernames, or IP address. With premium solutions, you can even choose the location where your backup files will be stored.
