The File Manager is a web interface which assists you in performing basic functions in managing your site. It is a friendly non-sophisticated tool which performs basic tasks that can be implemented even by non-professionals. Among these tasks are creating, uploading and deleting files, as well as changing files or folder permissions. In the File Manager, you can also compress files when you wish to group several files into one archive.
Compressing files is useful and efficient for organizing files in a folder containing groups of related content where you can implement different types of grouping and readily select the desired grouped files instead of selecting it one by one. It also saves time and effort on one-time sending of files in mails instead of attaching several individual files which to others may seem crowdy. Compressing files is also one way to decrease the size of the total documents being mailed.
To compress files, please follow the steps below:
STEP 1: Access the File Manager in the Files section of your cPanel.
STEP 2: Navigate to the directory to open the File Manager.
STEP 3: Pick the folder where the files you want to compress are located.
STEP 4: Select the files you wish to archive and click the Compress button. This compressed the files into a .zip file.
STEP 5: After compressing the files, pick the destination where the archive should be displayed.
STEP 6: You now have your .zip file.
You have the option of renaming the file. You can even download the compressed files from the server to your computer through the Download function. Take note that the compressed files do not affect the original files. Hence, you may also have the option to delete or rename the files within the archive. Similarly, you may also copy and move the compressed files into other folders or directories without affecting the original files.
Meanwhile, if you want to create and upload a file prior to compressing, please follow the listed steps below:
STEP 1: Click the New File link.
STEP 2: Name the file and pick the destination to which the file should be saved.
STEP 3: Open the folder under File Manager where you would like to upload the created file.
STEP 4: Click the Upload button and a Browse function will appear requesting for your desired file.
STEP 5: Select the file that you want to upload.
Make sure you have Zip installed in your system administration or else you will not be able to compress files in your cPanel File Manager interface. If you do not have Zip yet, the administrator should install the program at the command line using the “yum install zip” command.
If you see that you have the Zip function but you are still unable to compress the files, it could already be a software problem and you may try reinstalling the Zip program or simply that the selected file/s are corrupted.
On the other hand, if you want to extract the .zip files, simply click the Extract button and extract the archived files. For complete details, please refer to our separate article on Extract Zip Files in File Manager.
