The default e-mail (for cPanel) or more particularly, the catchall e-mail address is a mailbox on one’s domain. Its function is to catch all the e-mails that are addressed to a domain but are not found in a mail server. Setting up a catchall address prevents losing e-mails because of error in spelling.
Besides errors in the spelling, the catchall address will enable the users to receive e-mails despite the non-availability of the e-mail address. For example, if a user sent an e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org, but the address is not available in a businessman’s domain, then, the catch-all e-mail option will redirect such e-mail to the default address set up.
Setting Up the Default e-mail on a cPanel System
On the cPanel interface’s main screen, find and click the icon on the default (or catch-all) address. It will show the contents on a drop-down menu. The users should choose their (sub) domain with which the default address will be set up.
From there, the users have a few options, such as:
The final step is to confirm all the changes made and applied to the settings by clicking on the “change” button.
Why Catch All the e-mails?
There is a generally accepted advantage to setting up a catch-all e-mail. It enables the users to lessen the volume of e-mails lost because there is an error on the spelling on the recipient’s address.
For someone who is not connected with any business, this feature will minimize the incidences of receiving a mail return (such as mailer daemon) informing the recipient-sender that his or her e-mail (sent to a colleague for instance) has not been delivered due to an unknown recipient’s e-mail address.
A same thing can be said of businessmen who view every e-mail from clients to be very important.
With a catch-all email set up, instead of receiving an undelivered e-mail notification (on the part of sender) or losing an e-mail (on the part of supposed recipient), the e-mail will be forwarded to a catch-all mailbox. This will save time among the senders who might have spent some time trying to recall the correct e-mail address.
Although recently, some pessimists would regard the catch-all e-mail to be two-edged sword—that it has both harm and good. Those pessimists believe that the catch-all e-mail can be taken advantage of by spammers who may fool users that the spam e-mail comes from a legitimate source.
Irrespective of the truth on that, the catch-all e-mail is useful and efficient approach for receiving even those that are lost because of erroneous e-mail address. Whether the e-mail address is misspelled or it is meant for an address that is not existing, the catch-all e-mail will make sure the e-mail is sent to the right recipient.
