By default, web subdomains are programmed to point to the root folder of a web hosting account. However, most web hosts nowadays already offer the option to redirect subdomains to another existing domain, even if it’s not part of the parent account. Rather than directing your site visitors a very long, hard to recall URL, you can publish a much simpler web address through subdomain redirection. For example, you can point people visiting www.subdomain.domain.com to www.mybusiness.com – both of which land on the same page.
Subdomain redirection also allows you to point your visitors to another subdirectory of your website apart from the homepage. You can use it to forward visits directly to your products page, information or contact page.
Another good thing is you can use this feature to personalize parts of your site for a specific person such as a colleague, friend or family member. For instance, your friend Mike contributes contents to your website which are aggregated in a subdirectory called www.mike.mybusiness.com. For easier reference, you can create a subdomain called www.mybusiness.com/mike linking to that URL.
Activating subdomain redirection is an easy process, but in order to do it, you first have to check your DNS settings if it’s part of your web hosting plan. Once done, follow these simple steps:
Masking Subdomain Redirection
For a seamless transition, it is also advisable to mask redirection to your subdomain. Masking prevents your site visitors from seeing the redirection by retaining your domain name in a web browser’s address bar. This also lets you input Meta tags for your website title, description and keyword fields for search engine optimization purposes.
To forward a mask, first login to your Account Manager to check if your domain uses an SSL certificate or requires the https:// prefix as masking is not allowed for sites like this. When your redirect details have been added, go to your redirection settings, and select Redirect with Masking. You then have to update your nameservers to save the changes by checking the box next to Update my DNS setting to support this change.
