3/20/2015 – Extract Zip Files in File Manager

Posted by Jamison on 20 03 2015.

cPanel does let you upload and download large files quickly with a built-in File Manager. Here, the user can easily modify, edit and change the files associated with your website.

However, large files may prove difficult to download and upload especially if you have a poor internet connection or damaged cables and wires. If you’ve made sure that you don’t have any hardware problems, here are some reasons why you can’t compress or extract .zip files in File Manager:

  1. Your administrator hasn’t installed the Zip function for File Manager.
  2. Your .zip file is corrupted or has a problem.
  3. Your cPanel isn’t updated to the latest version and can possibly be experiencing conflicts.

Whatever the problem is that’s related to software, it’s best to uninstall (if it exists) and reinstall Zip or install the service. Here’s how to install Zip in File Manager for cPanel:

Your system administrator must install Zip at the command line with the yum install zip command. Contact your administrator so you can get this function up and running immediately.

How do you zip and unzip files on File Manager?

To create a new file please follow the steps listed below:

STEP 1 Step 1: Click on the New File link.

STEP 2 Enter the name of the file to be created. Please mind to add the correct extension. For example if you create a Perl file, the extension will be .pl.

STEP 3 Pick the destination where the file should be saved and click on the Create New File button. The file is created.

To edit an existing file in File Manager:

Editing an existing file through the File Manager allows you to make immediate changes to your web site without having to upload a new version of the file. This is useful for small changes but would be inefficient for large alterations. To edit a file please follow the steps below:

STEP 1 Navigate to the folder where the file is located.

STEP 2 Click on the name of the file.

STEP 3 Click on the Edit link in the top menu of your window. This will open a new window with the content of the file displayed.

STEP 4 Alter the text of the file.

STEP 5 Click on the Save Changes button when you are ready. The file is saved and the changes will take effect from now on.

You can use more sophisticated editors as the Code Editor and the HTML Editor. You can also click on the View link in the File Manager main menu. The file will be opened for reading and you will not be able to edit it.

Lastly, here’s how to extract and files on File Manager:

STEP 1 Select the file you want to extract.

STEP 2 Click the Extract button.
