3/17/2015 – My cPanel Does Not Update

Posted by Jamison on 17 03 2015.

While some people may think that updates are a waste of time and can interfere with your normal workflow, they are actually important for all users. Updates improve your user experience or deal with new threats online.

But what happens when cPanel does not update?

Here are a few preliminary checks before you contact customer support:

  • Check your internet connection. Connectivity problems may be blocking your update and your system simply thinks that the update is not possible.
  • Check your OS updates. Sometimes, new updates for Linux can get in the way of updating cPanel. Make sure that your Linux is updated and everything is in order before you hit ‘update’.
  • Check your program configurations. Sometimes, you may have configured cPanel not to receive updates. Check your configuration.
  • Check your hardware if your system is still able to support the newest update. If you’re running on an old system, you might need new hardware as old peripherals cannot support newer updates.

If these still don’t work, you may have blockers in place that stop you from updating. When you’ve targeted a specific update because you want a new function, cPanel and WHM needs to go through the intermediate updates first before sending you the latest major update.

Is this what’s happening to you?

For example, after a system administrator runs an update on a server that runs cPanel & WHM version 11.40, and the target version is cPanel & WHM version 11.46, the cPanel & WHM update process (upcp) performs the following actions:

  • The update process detects that the system must first upgrade to cPanel & WHM version 11.42.
  • The update process performs compatibility checks for the upgrade to cPanel & WHM version 11.42.
  • If the system is compatible, the update process upgrades cPanel & WHM to version 11.42.
  • If the system is not compatible, the update process sends a list of the compatibility issues to the system administrator, and the update process leaves the server on cPanel & WHM version 11.40.
  • After the upgrade to version 11.42 is complete, the update process performs compatibility checks for the upgrade to cPanel & WHM version 11.44.
  • If the system is compatible, the update process upgrades cPanel & WHM to version 11.44.
  • If the system is not compatible, the update process sends a list of the compatibility issues to the system administrator, and the update process leaves the server on cPanel & WHM version 11.42.
  • After the upgrade to version 11.44 is complete, the update process performs compatibility checks for the upgrade to cPanel & WHM version 11.46.
  • If the system is compatible, the update process upgrades cPanel & WHM to version 11.46.
  • If the system is not compatible, the update process sends a list of the compatibility issues to the system administrator, and the update process leaves the server on cPanel & WHM version 11.44.

Keep in mind that updates are ways for programs to keep up with your OS and the current threats that evolve from hackers, security breaches and the latest waves of attacks. cPanel support is continuously updating your functions to handle how the internet changes.
