12/29/2014 – How to Manage Images in cPanel

Posted by Jamison on 29 12 2014.

Images are an important part of a website, you must take care to balance the textual content of your website with some visual elements. Besides, a page with pictures or images is also very appealing to the eye of the viewer.

With the cPanel Image Manager you can view and modify images in your account as well as change the size of the images and convert their file type.

To access the Image Manager

  1. Log into cPanel.
  2. Go to the Advanced section and click the Image Manager icon.

You can now access the Thumbnailer, Image Scaler and Convert Image Format tools:

Thumbnailer

This tool allows users to create smaller, thumbnail-sized versions of all images in a defined directory of a website. Why exactly would you want small images? The bigger and image is, the more bandwidth it uses. You really should not have high-res or ultra high-res images on your website unless your website is about high-res photos.

The Thumbnailer application can only be applied to an entire directory and cannot be used on individual images.

How to convert images to thumbnails

  1. Go to the Image Manager and click on the Thumbnailer link. A copy of your home directory should appear
  2. Click on the folder beside the directory name for the directory that you are trying to access
  3. Click the name of the folder to create thumbnails for the images in that directory.
  4. You should be presented with the following options:
  • Scale Percent
  • Keep Aspect Ratio
  • Reset Dimensions

5. Once you are done, click Thumbnail Images

After the Image Manager has finished resizing the images, a thumbnails directory will be created in the selected folder with the prefix tn_.

Image Scaler

This tool will let users change the size of an individual image in degrees of percentage either up or down.

Rescaling an Image

  1. Go to the Image Manager and click on the Image Scaler link, a copy of your home directory should appear
  2. Click on the folder beside the directory name for the directory that you are trying to access
  3. Click the name of the file to be scaled
  4. Scale up or scale down your image
  5. You can also choose to toggle the following options:
  • Keep aspect ratio
  • Retain a copy of the old image as…
  • Reset dimensions

6. Once you have finished, click Scale Image

The next screen should provide you with a link to view the newly scaled image.

Convert Image Format (jpg,gif,bmp,etc)

Sometimes you have to convert the format of some images to another so they can be viewable with certain programs. Like the Thumbnailer, this tool cannot work on individual images, only directories.

How to convert an image:

  1. Go to the Image Manager and click the Convert Image Format (jpg, gif, bmp. etc) link. A copy of your home directory should appear.
  2. Click on the folder beside the directory name for the directory that you are trying to access.
  3. Click the name of the directory to be converted. You can convert any image file to .png, .gif, .jpg, or .bmp.
  4. Click Convert.

The new files should be found in the same directory as the original by default once the process is complete.
