11/05/2012 – Domain Management with cPanel

Posted by Jamison on 05 11 2012.

cPanel is a multi-layered, multi-featured integrated software package that allows web hosts to set up and maintain the accounts on their servers. It also enables your customers to have easy access that allows them to accomplish more tasks in less time. These tasks include setting up email accounts, security features, file management, and a multitude of others. Perhaps one of the simplest, yet critical features that cPanel includes, is the ability to manage domains.

Domain management is something that may seem so uncomplicated to do. Yet, one of the reasons that domains are easy to manage is that cPanel has tweaked this to the point of extraordinary simplicity. However, just because something is simple does not mean that task should be taken for granted. Domains form the foundation of your clients’ web presence and if domains are not setup properly, their visitors may not be able to find them or their sites may not display properly. Therefore, proper domain management is essential.

cPanel includes functionality that allows you and your customers’ access to:

  • Subdomains
  • Addon domains
  • Parked domains
  • Redirects
  • Simple DNS editor
  • Advanced DNS editor

While each of these may seem fairly self-explanatory, we will briefly discuss each one.

Subdomains provide webmasters multiple benefits. They are commonly used to:

  • Setup separate websites on the same domain.
  • Add a storage layer to the root domain.
  • Establish a separate site specifically for downloads or some other purpose.
  • Configure a separate domain for the benefit of additional DNS lookups thereby decreasing the site’s load time.
  • Many more

If you are a web host and you allocate your accounts to a specific number of Addon Domains, and/or Parked Domains, the cPanel interface provides easy access to these features. This essentially allows your clients to have multiple domains with multiple websites on one account. You can limit the number of Addon or Parked Domains through your WHM interface.

There are many valid instances where a webmaster must redirect one page or their entire site. They may be performing maintenance, rebuilding or moving their site, or some other valid purpose. Redirects are a simple task by going to the Domain section of their panel and clicking the Redirect icon then entering the desired redirect information.

The Simple DNS Editor and the Advanced DNS Editor may also be either enabled or disabled in your WHM client. These Editors allow your customers to create and manage A records and CNAMEs for their websites. The primary difference between the two Editors is the Advanced DNS Editor also allows the client to change their site’s TTL settings.

Yes, domain management with cPanel is one of the easiest tasks that webmasters can do. This is, in no small part, thanks to the many hours of work the folks at cPanel have put into this extraordinary software. If you currently do not have access to the cPanel software, you can buy your cPanel license(s) right there at today.
