Litespeed is both an Apache replacement and an Apache supporter. If you think that we have completely answered the question as to why do you need Litespeed web server in one sentence, then you may want to continue reading, as there is so much more to this than one sentence can contain.

Many of you have used Apache as the foundation for your servers since the software was introduced in the mid-1990s. It has been proven reliable many times over and until now, it has been the most stable and secure server platform available. How many of you caught that last sentence? We said that Apache was the things that each of us need to run our servers – until now.

Now there is Litespeed to form the foundation for our servers. As compared to the longevity of Apache, Litespeed may be considered as the new kid on the block. However, this new kid has the attitude that it takes to keep your servers functioning even in the midst of a DDOS attack when Apache fails. How can this be? Hasn’t Apache been strenuously tested by the community due to its open source code? Although Apache has been tested for several years, it does not mean there is not room for improvement. The improvement is where Litespeed enters the scene.

Many of you may have read or heard just how much faster Litespeed is than Apache. Tests have shown that Litespeed is indeed about nine times faster than Apache. Yet, some of the biggest improvements in Litespeed that make it a powerful competitor to Apache is its security.

Multiple tests have shown that in instances when an Apache server has failed due to a DDOS attack that the Litespeed server was still functioning. Didn’t we already cover the DDOS attack? Yes, we did. However, in today’s hostile environment, that added assurance that your servers can withstand the elements could be a tremendous benefit to your bottom-line.

Litespeed – Speed, power, and security, all packaged into a robust server platform that ready to take your hosting to the next level. That is why you need Litespeed web server.

In very simple terms, EasyApache is a command line activated script that allows you to update and reconfigure your Apache web server through WHM or SSH. It is also used to update and configure your PHP installation. Before running EasyApache be sure to update your cPanel and WHM configuration.

When you run EasyApache as root, you will be presented with a menu of options that range from beginner to advanced. Just a word of caution, the advanced selections are for experts only and should only be used if you know exactly what you are doing. Most server administrators will use one of the beginner selections as they have most of the needed configurations listed. The next screen will allow you to select any available Apache options you want to select or deselect, and the next screen does the same for any available PHP options.

After you have configured your options exit the script and Apache will recompile. When Apache has finished recompiling it will restart and you should see a message along the lines of httpd started ok. Confirm that your server accounts are functioning normally and you can return to your other functions.

While we have greatly simplified our explanation, of what to expect when running EasyApache, the application itself is very simple to use and will keep allow you to update Apache with relative ease.

One of the features that allow this script to be relatively easy to use, is that you can use the WHM profile to use as a template for building an EasyApache profile. These profiles can be a pre-existing profile, or a custom profile.

To briefly review. EasyApache is an easy way for you to update and configure your existing Apache and PHP installations with those features that you require for your hosting environment.

The Internet today is fraught with hazards that require you to maintain a constant vigil with respect to your servers’(more...)

The Internet today is fraught with hazards that require you to maintain a constant vigil with respect to your servers’ internal and external security measures. The constant threat of virus’, malware, DDOS attacks, and a multitude of intentional and unintentional threats is of great concern. While the methods for dealing with these threats could fill volumes, we have included some of what we think are critical to the security of your servers.

One of the most crucial security measures that we can take to secure our servers is also one of the easiest and least expensive to implement – passwords. Unsecure and weak passwords are one of the easiest ways for someone to break into our systems and cause an enormous amount of damage. Passwords should be at least eight characters in length and include a combination of letters and numbers.

Another common mistake that many webmasters and hosts make is a failure to secure their SSH. There are many instances that those who seek to gain access to your server will use port 22. It is a good course of action if you change this port to something less known.

There are two very important features that should be run on Apache servers – mod_security and suexec. For servers running PHP, it is recommended that PHP suexec be compiled as well. This added level of security keeps Apache and PHP secure, and if a malicious script is run, you will know who ran it.

It may sound more like common sense and it should go without mention, but one of your servers’ most important defenses to outside attack is its firewall. Ensure it is enabled. Another point that may sound more like common sense is to keep your operating system and applications up-to-date. Enabling your firewall, updating your software, and keeping your passwords secure, are some of the easiest security measures we can employ, yet these often seem so simple they are often overlooked.

There are many other security measures that we as web hosts can take to secure our servers from the hostile environment that is always seeking to gain access to our servers. One of the most important things for each of us to do is to remain diligent in our efforts. Our clients are counting on us to keep their sites online, and we are counting on them to continue their business with us.

Sometimes everyone needs a change from one platform to another and needing a change from one hosting panel to cPanel is not much different. There are times when we need to transition from legacy systems that have limited functionality and replace them with a platform that is more stable and robust. The migration from your existing panel to cPanel will provide your clients with new features and functionality.

However, before migrating from one panel to cPanel, there are a few things that you should be prepared before beginning the migration process, and during. You should also be prepared to correct any potential issues that may arise as part of this migration process. There are cases that certain issues do not present themselves until the process is ongoing. The best advice is to do it properly the first time in order to avoid any other potential issues later.

Before beginning the migration, the following requirements must be in place before the migration can proceed.

New Installation of cPanel without existing accounts

A valid cPanel license

Root access to the server from which you are transferring the accounts (i.e., the remote server)

Your cPanel server must be running the latest CURRENT release of cPanel and WHM

The MySQL version on your remote server should be at least 4.1

The Perl version on your remote server should be at least 5.6.2

If you server set up meets these pre-requisites, then an in-depth analysis of your system will need to be performed. This process tests for items such as software compatibility, and how your server utilizes its resources. During each step of the migration, consistent testing will occur in order to validate the transfer.

Once the migration is complete, your server will be running the most recent cPanel and WHM license.

Whether you are installing cPanel/WHM from a new server or from an existing server, you need to purchase a cPanel and WHM license for the IP address of your server.

If you are installing cPanel and WHM onto a new server, you must install your operating system before you can begin installing cPanel/WHM. For an existing server, simply follow the next set of installation steps.

Once you have your cPanel and WHM license you are ready to install the software. The first step is to open your home directory by typing the command cd / home. cPanel and WHM must be downloaded from the servers by using the wget command. You should have the complete address of the download server as provided by your sales rep.

After the download completes, you will then type the command sh latest. This opens the installation files and executes them. During the installation, the cPanel and WHM license will be verified. If the license check fails, simply follow the instructions that your sales rep provided to manually complete the process.

By default, the cPanel and WHM installation also installs the latest Apache and PHP versions. Once installation is complete, you can customize your configuration with EasyApache, which is included with WHM.

If you are installing cPanel and WHM on DNSONLY, you follow the same instructions as indicated above, with the exception of you include DNSONLY in the wget and sh latest commands per the instructions from your customer representative.

Upon completing the cPanel and WHM installation, you are then ready to log into the WHM. You do this by entering https://$IP:2087 into your web browser. This is similar fashion as when logging into a cPanel account. You will be prompted to enter a Name. In this field, enter the word root. Then enter your password in the password field. Then click log in.

You are now ready to setup your server using WHM!

You have read all of the product literature, and what seems to be an almost endless train of reviews about cPanel, and you are ready to purchase a cPanel license so you can install the software on your server. Now what do you do? You have read the purchase information in the online store at BuycPanel.com and you now ask which license you purchase. Perhaps a better question for you to ask is how you intend to use your servers.

cPanel is licensed for different environments – virtual and dedicated. There is no difference in the cPanel functionality between either setup. In each environment, cPanel is licensed for each account that is set up on your server. It should be noted, however, that a license for a virtual server will only work on a virtual server, and a license for a dedicated server will only work on a dedicated server. You cannot interchange the two license types.

In addition, even though one cPanel license covers all of your accounts on one server, you cannot use the same cPanel license on multiple servers. One cPanel license only covers one server. Therefore, if you have two servers that you want to install cPanel on, you must purchase two licenses. One server cannot include both a virtual and a dedicated environment. Each cPanel license is intended for use on only one environment.

Once cPanel is installed and verified on one server with one environment, the license does include any type of account on that server, and includes unlimited IP’s on that server.

When you order your cPanel license from BuycPanel.com, your license will be activated instantly and will be ready for you to install on your server. If you still have questions about purchasing your cPanel license from BuycPanel.com, please contact us via email, or by Live Chat. We will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have about purchasing a cPanel license.

One of the most difficult parts of being a web host is in being responsive to sudden spikes due to(more...)

One of the most difficult parts of being a web host is in being responsive to sudden spikes due to a resource overload from one account on your server. These spikes appear like lightening out of nowhere, and if left unchecked can shut down your server and cause your clients to contact your support desk in great numbers and could overload that too. Most virtual environments are capable of handling small spikes of short duration. However, in today’s competitive environment, you cannot afford to risk having one single account shut down your entire server. This is why you need to look for answers before something goes wrong.

CloudLinux could possibly be the answer you are seeking! It was designed specifically with the needs of the web host in mind, and functions in the types of high-demand situations as were previously mentioned.

CloudLinux isolates each tenant on the server. What this means to you is that if one tenant creates a sudden resource demand on your server that could potentially exceed its capacity, CloudLinux isolates that resource spike to the tenant that it originates. This leaves the rest of the tenants on your server running as if nothing is happening. Which in reality, it is not happening on their part of the server.

Another feature that CloudLinux includes is called SecureLVE. This feature further isolates the tenants in that they are no longer able to see each other’s file systems. This not only improves privacy, it increases the security of your servers. Since hackers cannot see the adjacent file system, they are unable to formulate an attack.

CloudLinux is capable of operating on shared hosting environments or datacenters. This flexibility allows you to focus more on running your hosting environment than on monitoring for these unanticipated resource spikes. The only tenant these clients will affect will be their own space. Leaving you worry free!

Since 1997, cPanel has provided web hosts with a stable and affordable interface for their clients. As part of the company’s commitment to its customers, cPanel integrates with a variety of operating systems (OS). This flexibility allows cPanel’s customers to operate the servers and operating systems that suit their own personal and specific needs. This further allows these web hosts to provide their own clients with perhaps the best point-and-click hosting solution available – cPanel.

cPanel supports the following operating systems:

CentOS versions 4.x, 5.x, 6.x

Red Hat® Enterprise Linux® versions 4.x, 5.x, 6.x

FreeBSD®-RELEASE versions 7.3, 7.4, 8.0, 8.1, 8.2

CloudLinux 5.x, 6.x

In addition, cPanel also supports the following virtual environments:

KVM

Linux-VServer

Microsoft Server® 2008 Hyper-V

OpenVZ (stable releases only)

Oracle VM VirtualBox, VirtualBox OSE

Virtuozzo™

VMware® Server, VMware® ESX Server

Xen, XenEnterprise™, XenExpress™, XenServer™

Many of us have our own preference that normally determines which operating system we use on our servers. These preferences are often the result of our own experiences and bias’. However, the tried and proven operating system for many server uses is based on the Linux kernel. This is easy to see from the operating system list above. The exception to this is in FreeBSD, which is a separate OS.

The supported virtual environments that cPanel supports includes several OSs, with many of them being non-Linux environments. This shows a great deal of flexibility for cPanel.

While there are many variables to consider when selecting which OS to use with your servers, reliability, security, and scalability, are some important factors to consider. It is also worthy of a mention at this point that it is beyond the scope for us to recommend a particular OS for your environment. This is a decision that must be made to fit your particular situation.

As a web host, you know just how important it is to do regular backups of your servers. cPanel makes backups easy and provides several options that we should all be familiar with. One very important feature that we should mention first is that cPanel can be configured to run backups automatically. You just have to set it up to do so by accessing the configure backup section of the software.

Only system files and directories are included in a backup by default. If you want more of your server included in the backup, you must enable account backups. This includes databases, DNS records, email filters and forwarders, as well as the contents of the home directory. When you enable account backups, anything that your users cannot access is not included in the backups. You can also select which user’s accounts are included in the backups as well.

You should also be aware that cPanel does not support backups that use rsync. One of the reasons for this is that in some cases rsync has been known to corrupt database backups.

As with most anything that is done with cPanel, there are logs of the backups. These backup logs are located at /usr/local/cpanel/logs/cpbackup.

One valuable feature of the cPanel backup system is that you choose where your backup files are stored. When we say valuable, we are saying that every hosting environment is different and each administrator has their own preference as to where they want the backups stored. Over the long-term, this is more convenient than if cPanel made the selection.

You set the schedule for automatic backups by editing the root’s crontab. The command for this is crontab –e from the command line.

While it may sound like an ancient idea, backing up your servers is not only good technical practice, but also good business. If an unforeseen event knocks your servers offline and destroys data, having a backup on hand can help put your servers back online and ready to do business. cPanel makes this possible.

It is a bright, sunny morning and you have just arrived at work when you are informed by a member of tech support that the servers hiccuped sometime during the night and failed to go back online. Almost every phone in your business is ringing with confused and irate clients calling wanting to know why their websites have been offline for the past six hours. Your IT supervisor has also just informed you that it will take two to three hours to return your network back to normal capacity. Why is this happening, you question. You lack the budget to have a system administrator on location 24/7/365. However, you cannot afford to have the system down and alienate your clients either. There must be some way to avoid this from happening again.

What is Server Monitoring?

Server monitoring is a service that BuycPanel offers that can avoid a similar scenario as was mentioned in the preceding section. The BuycPanel server monitoring service ensures that your servers are monitored 24/7/365 and will notify you, or someone you designate if there are any problems with your servers. These notices are delivered either by email or by SMS.

What is included in Server Monitoring?

Your servers are not only monitored for uptime, they are also monitored for global availability. A few of services that are included in the BuycPanel server-monitoring package is included here.

Support for multiple protocols

Notification of downtime

The addition of a “Live Status Report” for your website

In the event of downtime, a reboot request will be automatically sent to your provider

Reports on uptime and performance that are easy to read

The elimination of false alarms

Scheduled maintenance

Free data migration from another server monitoring service

The simplicity of accessibility through your web browser

Why should you purchase server monitoring from BuycPanel?

To be perfectly frank, should the above situation ever happen to you or to your business, the loss in client confidence in your capability to deliver a robust, reliable, secure, network for them to host their websites, then you would likely struggle to regain their trust – if you could. We do not say this to be fearful. We say this because the above scenario either has probably happened or has almost happened to at least one of you who are reading this.

Do not place your business – your livelihood, in the hands of fate. Instead, let BuycPanel monitor your server network so you can focus on what you do best – providing the best web hosting packages in the industry.
